AS (Anne-Sophie) van Lanen MSc

Anne-Sophie obtained her Bachelor degree in Nutrition and Health from Wageningen University in 2014, during which she spent time studying at the Erasmus Medical Centre in Rotterdam and at UC Davis in California, the United States. During her Master degree in Nutrition and Health, specializing in nutritional physiology and health status, she worked at the University Medical Centre Utrecht to study and publish results on resting energy expenditure in cystic fibrosis patients before and after lung transplantation. While performing her internship at Unilever, Anne-Sophie investigated and published her results on the efficacy of a low-FODMAP diet on gastrointestinal symptoms in irritable bowel patients. After graduating in 2020, she was employed as a research assistant at the Division of Human Nutrition and Health at Wageningen University to write an METC protocol for a large cohort study and an intervention study, investigating disease occurrence and inflammation in relation to raw cow’s milk consumption in dairy farmers.

Pursuing her interest in nutrition and disease, she started working on a PhD project studying the relation between nutrition and disease prognosis in colorectal cancer patients in November 2020. She will also study whether this association is the same for specific subgroups of patients. The project is embedded in the COLON study, a large prospective cohort study of Dutch colorectal cancer patients, and combines the fields of biology and epidemiology. Anne-Sophie is currently studying how dairy and meat intakes relate to tumour recurrence and all-cause mortality in colorectal cancer patients. By studying the role of nutrition in disease prognosis, Anne-Sophie aims to contribute to specific dietary guidelines for patients who aim to improve their prognosis via lifestyle change.
