Wageningen University & Research researches obesity from several angles: from basic research to applied social projects.
Overweight and obesity are a global problem: in 2008, 35% of adults over 20 years were overweight and 11% obese. In 2011, more than 40 million children younger than 5 years were overweight. Overweight and obesity are the 5th leading cause of death worldwide. Obesity increases the risk of heart disease, diabetes and some cancers. Wageningen University & Research researches amongst other the development of obesity and its consequences, at both a health and a social level.
