Breeding livestock to control methane
January 1, 2020 - The livestock sector is faced with the challenge of drastically reducing its methane emissions. Most methane emissions in livestock farming originate from cattle, and several strategies are available to reduce these emissions. One of these strategies is targeted breeding. A study funded by the Topsector Agri and Food, in collaboration with FrieslandCampina and CRV (cattle breeding cooperative), is investigating whether methane emissions of individual animals can be reduced through a targeted breeding programme. -
Relationship between microbiome and genetics
January 1, 2020 - What is the relationship between the composition of the rumen microbiome and the cow's genetics? The integrated approach to methane and ammonia in dairy farming, with the aim of implementing the targeted reductions in 2030, means that for the ration, the entire chain of measures and practices to arrive at a ration (ensilage, grassland management, grass harvesting, quality, grazing, fertilisation, etc.) must be investigated. The effects of this in practice will be tested on pilot farms and demonstrated on demo farms so that action perspectives can be given to farmers. -
AQUAEXCEL3.0
January 1, 2020 - AQUAEXCEL3.0 is the third AQUAEXCEL project in succession, and aims to integrate top class European aquaculture research facilities, covering all relevant scientific fields for research and innovation in aquaculture, from genetics to technology through pathology, physiology and nutrition. -
European Reference Center for Animal Welfare (EURCAW)
January 1, 2019 - The first European Reference Center for Animal Welfare (EURCAW) started on October 1, 2018, led by Wageningen Livestock Research, at the invitation of DG SANTE of the European Commission. The aim is to support the EU Member States with regard to European legislation on the welfare of pigs: on the farm, during transport and slaughter. In 2018, the 2019-2022 work plan was drawn up based on the needs of the Member States. This program is updated every two years at the request of the European Commission, and the Member States are asked about their priorities. -
EELRIC: Eel Reproduction Innovation Centre
July 1, 2018 - EELRIC is a platform for the reproduction of eel and a home for an international consortium of partners sharing experience and collaborating to force breakthroughs. -
Kwantitatieve informatie KWIN veehouderij
January 1, 2017 - Quantitative Information Livestock production contains actual information about revenues and costs on livestock farms. It is for dairy, goats, sheep, horses, pigs, poultry, rabbits and from 2022 also insects. -
Farming for Nature
January 1, 1999 - Farming for Nature envisions integration of agriculture and ecology by means of an extensive farming system. Manure is turned into a scarce resource on the farm, drainage is reduced and landscape elements are brought back. The farmer is compensated financially on the basis of a long-term agreement. This concept has been tried out on a dairy farm in the Biesland polder (province of Zuid-Holland) and on two sheep farms and a farm with suckler cows on the Twickel estate (province of Overijssel).
