During this week’s World Water Week a new report was launched by the World Wildlife Fund: Sustainable Groundwater Management for Agriculture.

Our WSG-researcher Inge de Graaf contributed to this report with her research. She provides new insights on the impact of groundwater extraction on freshwater ecosystems and how much of our irrigated agriculture currently depends on unsustainably used groundwater.

As the most abundant source of freshwater available to humans, groundwater plays a crucial role in producing food, supplying drinking water, and supporting natural habitats that support both people and the environment. However, the threat of further disruption to freshwater systems and continued unsustainable management of groundwater put the future of humanity in a precarious position.

The report highlights the drivers of overuse - including the connection between groundwater and agriculture - and celebrates the existing solutions from around the world.
