BSc Minor A Healthy Lifespan: from cell to society

BSc Minor A Healthy Lifespan: from cell to society

Continue to an overview of the minor

Profile

A prolonged healthy lifespan can be achieved through nutritional and lifestyle interventions. This Minor offers two complementary tracks in period 1 and 2 that each provide insight into the underlying cellular mechanisms (life science track: LT) and communication strategies (communication track: CT) in support of healthy ageing. Importantly, both tracks converge in period 3 where students are challenged to seek dilemma's, debate and dogmas associated with healthy lifespan research, and find synergies between insights from the other track. Through this holistic approach, students design nutritional and lifestyle interventions for a healthy lifespan.

The outcomes are communicated by students during a public outreach event in collaboration with Oud geleerd Jong gedaan (OGJG). OGJG engages elderly people through inspiring student communication sessions. These interactive group sessions are effective in mitigating loneliness by means of group bonding and fostering social interactions. Altogether this Minor provides students with the necessary knowledge, skills and insights to prepare them for the next step into healthy aging research and communication.

Learning Outcomes

After successful completion of this minor students are expected to be able to:

  • i) Explain how cellular determinants, or ii) explain how communication strategies, support a healthy lifespan
  • Identify and compare dilemma, doubt, discourse, and dogma in the field of health span research
  • Design a strategy for nutritional and lifestyle interventions based on fundamental understanding of cellular mechanisms or public health practices and to communicate this to society.
